Smoked Apple Pie Filling
Very lightly smoked apple pie filling that adds an extra touch of flavor to a simple apple pie dessert.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup - Brown Sugar
- 1/4 cup - Flour
- 1/2 tsp - Cinnamon
- pinch - Nutmeg
- 2 or 3 - Granny Smith Apples (medium)
- 2 or 3 - Honey Crisp Apples (medium)
- 1 TBSP - Lemon Juice
- 1 - egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients into a large bowl. Apples and lemon juice first, then the rest.
- Dump into flat container that you can put into the smoker.
- Smoke anywhere from 225f to 250f for up to 1.5 hours depending on how much smoke you want and what type of smoker you have.
- You are able to can this hot mixture immediately by water bath method. Or you can let it cool a little and immediately make an apple pie with it.
Cook notes
You can use cast iron pans, pie pans, cake pans, etc. The more surface area the more smoke you will get on the filling. You may need to adjust depending on your smoker type. Pellet smokers tend to get less smoke than stickburners, so you'll have to get to know your smoker.
