FREE BBQ COOK TOOL
Smoker Fuel Calculator
Estimate wood splits, pellets, lump charcoal, or briquettes to stage for an offset, pellet grill, kettle, kamado, charcoal smoker, or gravity smoker.
SHORT ANSWER
How much smoker fuel do I need?
Choose the cooker and cook length to get a starting range. The result adds fuel for higher pit heat, cold weather, and wind, then shows a 20% reserve. Your own cooker history will beat any general estimate.
Use the tool
Choose the cooker, cook length, pit temperature, outside temperature, wind, and wood type when using an offset.

Why this is not an exact count
Two bags of lump do not have identical piece size or density, and two smokers do not leak the same amount of heat. The range is for staging fuel, not predicting the last briquette.
Use clean smoke
More wood is not automatically better. Keep the fire burning cleanly and adjust the amount of smoke to the food and the flavor you want.
How the starting estimate is calculated
- Consumption changes with cooker type and planned cook hours
- Higher pit heat, weather below 45°F, and exposed wind add fuel
- Weather above 85°F reduces the starting estimate slightly
- Reserve: 20% above the high estimate
These are scheduling assumptions. Use your own smoker history when you have it.
